Starting a new chapter
Just a small introduction to myself and my current situation:
My Name’s Magnus Løgstrup Nielsen, I’ve been into design since I was 13, which I guess must be around 22 years as of writing this 🫣
Finding it difficult to post anything really personal online on social channels, I’ve decided to share my more personal side on this blog! If reading this, I also hope you’ll take some time off to have a look at my showcase!
Some brief history
It all started with me growing up on a small island in Denmark called Bornholm. Getting my first computer and being caught up in computer games – especially a game called Unreal Tournament – which I discovered had a very friendly and welcoming community of people creating custom mods/skins/maps etc. (S/O to the old Epic Games community!)
By establishing connections with other creatives, I came to the understanding that the previous generation of developers/artists were not good at sharing past experiences and not being open about their creative process. The people I made connections with back then had the exact opposite approach! Though it did take some years for me to manage what I was doing (and most importantly what I wanted to do) – learning anything from Photoshop 5.5, Maya 4.5 to C++. A bit of a mouthful perhaps – but being young and curious you gotta try out things!
Eventually I took the move to ‘the big city’ of Copenhagen to get myself an education in media design. A professional bachelor degree today, which is mostly focused on the practical parts of print production etc. – I spent roughly 7,5 years being an in-house designer doing anything from print material to web design, creative tasks, but most importantly getting a understanding of knowing what client wants and needs.
Being young – and perhaps a bit naive – I decided together with a class mate to start this business called All is Visual. A misheard Queen lyric from Radio ga-ga (“Free us from all this visual”), but also a sentence I strongly believe in!
I’ve always been a kid that hears one thing and sees a ton of things, and instead of pushing this part of me away I found it best to embrace it! A strength in some situations and in other more ‘normal’ social situations a bit more difficult when being misunderstood – but hey, that’s life! right?.. RIGHT???
Aaaanyway.. So we started this company and I unfortunately I did not have my head and heart the same place as my co-founder, so we split paths not long after getting started. I later took on tasks doing a mix of web development and creative work, and after some years doing work for different clients, like artists, startups, smaller businesses I found I’d come to a place where I wanted to do one thing more dedicated and joined forces with a large retail chain doing internal work for the past 5 years.
These past years with a lot of experience and proofing to myself what can be done for little has made it very clear to me what I want to focus on:
I want to be fully visual in what I do.
I started programming to do visual things and not be depending on a programmer to understand what I wanted to do. After many years of doing quite tech-heavy tasks and especially doing maintenance of these solutions, I have found myself to be more of a creator with a visionary mindset. Seeing things that’s not been done yet, more than fixing what has already been done.
It’s fascinating how life can keep showing you new sides and paths to take you!
The year’s 2022
And here we are – we’ve come through the hopefully worst part of a pandemic. I’ve decided to go full-on with my business as a digital artist and motion designer. I want to use this blog so I can share the many unseen things in what I do – like sketches, experiements and perhaps my commentary on what I see when going through a sometimes visually noisy world.
I hope you’ll join in on the fun and please do leave a comment so I know I’m not alone in this forum! 😊
Take care and thanks for reading!
